Monthly tiers (Gold Coast couples)
Lean (~$1,500–2,000/month): modest long-term rent, mostly local food, limited A/C, careful dining out. Possible but tight for North-American comfort norms.
Comfortable (~$2,000–3,500/month): nicer rental or HOA community, mixed dining, reliable fiber, private healthcare top-up, a car budget. The band most expat couples actually land in.
Premium ($3,500–5,000+/month): pool home, heavy A/C, frequent tourist restaurants, more travel to San José, higher HOA. Easy to overspend if you recreate a US coastal lifestyle 1:1.
What moves the number
Housing and electricity dominate. A 4x4, HOA fees, and imported goods add up. Property tax is low (0.25% of registered value) if you own — but ownership is a capital decision, not a monthly COL substitute.
If you will short-term rent when you travel, model net income honestly — do not subtract fantasy peak-season gross from your retirement budget.
Buffers to keep
Hold a currency and medical buffer (private care + flights). Plan a green-season trial rental before you buy so your budget survives May–November, not just February.
Residency categories have income or investment thresholds separate from lifestyle spend — confirm current rules with an immigration attorney.
Map the budget to a town
Coco for airport-practical living; Tamarindo for busier services and tourist pricing; quieter corridor towns when you want less nightlife. Compare on the retirement and town guides, then browse homes for sale only after the monthly number still works.
Retiring on a pension or Social Security
If the plan is pension and/or US Social Security (or CPP/OAS), build from income you can count on in USD, then stress-test FX, healthcare bridge, rent-first vs buy, and STR offset only after a real /check.
Illustrative: ~$3,000–$4,000/month reliable income can work lean-to-comfortable with right-sized housing; luxury beachfront usually needs more. US Social Security and private pensions can also support a pensionado residency path when monthly lifetime pension income meets the legal threshold — confirm with an immigration attorney.
Lifestyle spend and visa thresholds are different numbers. See residency and retirement. Snowbird weeks (not full move)? Florida alternatives.

How much money do you need to retire in Costa Rica?
On the Guanacaste Gold Coast, many couples budget about $2,000–3,500/month for a comfortable lifestyle before purchasing a home. Lean is possible near $1,500–2,000; premium lifestyles run higher. Verify residency income thresholds separately.
Can you retire in Costa Rica on $2,000 a month?
A careful couple can, especially with modest rent and local food — but pool homes, heavy A/C, and tourist dining push past $2,000 quickly. Use the tiers above and the cost-of-living guide.
Can I retire on Social Security alone?
Sometimes at a lean tier with modest housing. Run the monthly band before shopping listings. Pensionado residency has its own minimum pension-income rules — confirm with an immigration attorney. This page is lifestyle budget, not visa advice.
Can I retire abroad on Social Security?
Many US retirees fund Gold Coast living partly with Social Security. Whether SS alone covers your tier depends on housing and A/C. Stress-test FX and healthcare buffers. Pair with Costa Rica Residency Through Real Estate.
Can I retire abroad on a pension?
Yes for many couples if the pension (or combined income) covers your monthly tier plus buffers. Costa Rica’s pensionado path is built around lifetime pension income — verify current thresholds. Pair this budget page with Costa Rica Residency Through Real Estate.
How much do you need to retire in Guanacaste vs inland Costa Rica?
Guanacaste’s Gold Coast is pricier than many inland towns because of tourism and expat demand. Inland can be cheaper; this page is Gold Coast–focused.
Does buying a house lower my retirement budget?
It can replace rent, but you still pay HOA, electricity, maintenance, and opportunity cost of capital. Model ownership separately from monthly COL — and residency still has its own income rules.
